External shame: which expresses “feelings that others evaluate self in negative way” (13).
Antecedents of shame:
Antecedents are events or incidents that must occur prior to occurrence of a concept, phenomenon, or event (1).
Based on a review of the related literature, the major antecedents of shame have been identified as follows:
1. Self-awareness: the individual ought to express adequate awareness so as to characterize self from others and compare self to others (3).
2. Social contexts: there is a relation between shame and self-experiences that starts from home and extends to societal institutions (3).
3. Cultural identity: this refers to certain cultural values and techniques to force control on undesirable, as well as desirable, behaviors that is passed from generation to generation by parents who may, as well, pass over ‘Natural’ shame (which takes place when a person is displeased from his features and behaviors) and ‘Moral’ shame, which takes place when its combined with a self-related idea that is not met (3).
Shame may be associated with alcoholic individuals, people diagnosed with eating disorders, like bulimia, people who have suicidal ideas, family members of individuals under psychiatric care, or nurses who have unprofessional conduct …show more content…
She was maintained on the pattern of proper diet and exercise regularly. However, in one day, and when it was time for the breast self-examination in her home, she felt the presence of mass in the left breast but she did not disclose this to her husband or anyone of her family. After several months, she woke up one day and saw that there are secretions from the breast and blood coming out of the nipple. This sign forced the woman to see the doctor who discovered that she is suffering from a tumor in the breast and that she needs immediate surgery of the breast. When the women was asked why she did not discuss the differences that have occurred in her breast with her doctor, she dropped her head, looked away, stooped shoulders, and simply said: “it’s a shame in our society that we discuss such
