Character:

The main characters in The Color Purple are strong individuals, who have dealt with heavy hearts. Most of the characters in the novel are flat and static; for many of the characters don't go through any major changes or breakthroughs by the end of the book. Celie on the other hand, is both round and dynamic. Celie went through a total change of character by the end of the novel. She's round because her character started as a quiet, and girl who was constantly taken advantage of. She fought past all the suffering and discovered who she is as a person. She also found self love and confidence along the way. She is dynamic because at one point in the story, she lost all hope and faith. Celie didn't know whether to believe if God

She is an empowered, free-spirited jazz player. Shug is a very eccentric character, especially in her time. She fills the role of Celie’s friend and lover. She is described by Celie as, "the most beautiful woman I ever saw." (Walker 6). Shug is seen as self-centered and very unpredictable. Despite her superficial nature, Shug is lovable, and cares incredibly about Celie. She's known to push people away, but can't stand deprivation of attention. Her real name is Lilly but she goes by her nickname Shug. Shug is short for "sugar", which is almost the complete opposite of her personality. She may be showing a defiance in who she real is by losing her real name. Shug guides Celie to learn how to love, and rediscover the meaning of life. She influences Celie to be her own person. She helps to heal Celie’s self. When talking to Celie about God, she claims, "I believe God is everything, said Shug. Everything that is or ever was or ever will be. And when you can feel that, and be happy to feel that, you found It." (Walker 195) This shows how Shug hasn't been influenced by anybody's interpretations of life, and has found her own significance of life. She has a deep understanding of the world around her, and is
