This stage is then followed by a slow-wave sleep, which is when the neocortex sends out waves in low frequencies and vast amplitudes. These signals are often recorded by using EEG (electroencephalographic). Researchers found out after seeing the EEG recordings that a night’s sleep is dispersed by periods in which make readings irregular in frequency and low in amplitude which makes it similar the state where a person is awake. These periods of mental activity are called REM sleep. After REM Occurs this is when dreams start to happen. During REM sleep the body is paralyzed not being able to move due to the motor neurons being inhibited. During REM the eyes start move rapidly when eyes closed, irregular breathing and increase in heart beat rate. The first REM lasts for ten minutes and occurs after ninety minutes of slow-wave sleep, then the second and third REM stage occurs for a much longer time but they flow a much shorter slow-wave sleep. The fourth and final REM is when most of our dreams occur and lasts for twenty to thirty minutes and then after that is when we wake up.
