The Mexican-American War was result of this belief and this caused a lot of suffering for many Mexicans, as well as many Native Americans. The second cause of the Mexican-American war was the Texas War of Independence from Mexico. In 1836, after Mexico won independence from Spain, Texas rebelled against the Mexican government to become free and with the help of US, Texas won its independence. Texas, in return, wanted to join the Union in the US; however the United States did not want a conflict with Mexico, and turned down the request. When US decided to purchase Texas and add onto its territory, Mexico refused and this caused tension. The strain between the two nations expanded as Texas eventually became a U.S. state and this caused further disputed to erupt and sparked military confrontation over the border lines and eventually sparked a war between the two nations. The Treaty of Guadeloupe Hidalgo stated that the Mexican government had to surrender to the US along with Mexico recognized Texas ' independence. Additionally, the treaty called for the annexation of the northern portions of Mexico to the United States however, in return the U.S. agreed to pay $15 million to Mexico for the seized territory. Everyone was happy with the land and territory gain but eventually the topic of slavery became an issue as they weren’t sure whether the new land would come into the Union as a slave state or a free state; this caused a lot of dispute and un-tranquility. However, to calm much of the tension down, the Compromise of 1850 was passed. The compromise stated that California would join the Union as a free state and to balance it, the newly acquainted Texas be joined as a slave state.
