During his life Martin Luther King, Jr focused on ending the abomination that is segregation and racism in the south. Mama and Celie both are timid and shy to the point where they allow others to walk over them without putting up a fight. Mama and Celie both go through life seemingly allowing someone to take advantage of them until both characters reached a point in their perspective story where something occurs that they will no longer put up with said person and finally stand up for themselves. For Celie being able to read the letters her sister sent her gave her the confidence to stand up to Albert while for Mama it was Dee asking for the old quilts and then seeing Maggie as someone who has never won anything allowed her to say no to Dee. The main characters of Everyday Use and the Color Purple go through similar experiences albeit the differences between the two stories is the length of each journey that we get to experience. In the Color purple we see most of Celie 's life while in Everyday Use we only see a glimpse in the life of Mama and that isn 't the only difference. Everyday Use captures the denial of heritage and taking advantage of her mother through the eldest daughter who renamed herself to a more African sounding name and then tries to take anything she pleases only to have a hissy fit when her mother finally gets the confidence to say no to her. Alice Walker takes two completely different people and shows how even though their situations may not be the same as one is dealing with her eldest daughter and the other an abusive husband both stories capture the journey that each character takes to get to the point of them standing up for themselves which makes the two stories correlate with each other even though the danger of each situation is not the same.
