Studies have shown by Rauen (2004) that using simulation helps excel skills that critical care nurses use and requires the nurse to think on their feet. Rauen (2004) says that simulations have been used in other careers and outside of hospitals that it “provides …show more content…
During this simulation, we had to assess the patient, call the doctor, and identify the vital signs and the lab work. The patient started off feeling find but a little strange, he had just had and abdominal surgery and it was bothering him. As the assessment progressed, the patient’s vitals began to rise, he began to perfuse more and more, with a change in his level of consciousness. When we noticed his change in consciousness that’s when we as students began to panic a little. We called the doctor and were given orders for antibiotics and fluids to be given to the patient. At the end of this simulation we the students agreed that it was easy to notice the septic shock due to the assessment and vitals, but what was challenging was knowing what to do, if it be call the doctor, what medicine we could give right away and get orders later and the exact lab test to draw and look at. This simulation experience was very good to introduce us into what to expect when a patient goes into shock, how to get ahold of the doctor and how to follow orders from a phone …show more content…
As we entered the room and received the brief report, we all knew from class and clinical experience that the patient was in heart failure and had fluid on his lungs. We started our assessment and began looking at the lab results that correlated with heart failure. During this time we called the doctor to let her know the lab results and to find out what medicine and orders we needed. The instructor had to help us identify the medicine to give and it was up to us to find the correct dosage. From our class experience we were able to calculate the dosages and give them correctly, the difficult part of this simulation was identifying the correct medicine that was needed to be given. At the end of this simulation we talked about how we felt it went and agreed that it went easier than the septic shock simulation, but it showed that we were not familiar with the drugs that needed to be
