Because of his sorrow experience, this characteristic appears valuable. After reading about the stories of his unreasonable parents who expel him from home for several times and his brother who occupies all the family property, I couldn’t help but complaining with my roommates about his vicious families. However, Shen Fu himself doesn’t show his resentment and complaint about his suffering in the whole book. Instead, he just records those things in a few words. What he depicts more are his gentle wife, funny hobbies and fascinating landscapes. Many details in the book can reflect his optimistic life attitude. Just like a name he chooses for the hall they live in chapter one: “ […] named ‘After my heart’ —— the reference was to a old poem: ‘When the water is clear, I will wash the tassels of my hat, and when the water is muddy, I will wash my feet’ ” (Lin 19) . I cannot agree more with his opinion. A good life is not measured by one’s life experience, but by one’s life attitude. Whether optimism or pessimism, one’s life passes from one day to the next. Therefore, why not choose an optimistic life attitude and ignore those sufferings? His sufferings are like knives throwing at him by the destiny, but his optimistic life attitude allows him to accept knives at ease.
