I found this book interesting for a number of reasons. Firstly, its a story about survival and is connected to real life horrors that happened during the rise and fall of Nazi Germany. Vladek Spiegelman is clearly a survivor of some of the most terrifying events of WWII for Jews by sharing what had happened to him, his family members, and acquaintances. Additionally, in other courses I have studied a number of historic events and do recall being informed on Nazi German atrocities in Poland and beyond to which reading about Spiegelman’s story reminds me of some of the information I did read upon. The chances of one surviving these events are highly unlikely so the story 's value is significant to one who may be interested in understanding the difficulties Jews faced during that time. The death of Vladek Spiegelman’s wife is mysterious as not much information is given of except for the fact that she committed suicide later in her life after the war. It can be assumed that the loss of her family and many loved ones may have been a factor but not much is known due to Vladek Spiegelman burning her diaries after she had passed away. The reason I found this book interesting is because I ' am able to use my understanding of the "Final Solution", Nazi atrocities in Poland, and Vladek Spiegelman’s life experiences to put together an understanding of what one, being Jewish, in Poland had experienced. I was fascinated by his story because as mentioned before the chances of one surviving these events and the holocaust are highly …show more content…
In Art Spiegelman’s novel I can see how Jews worked with German 's as he suggests through his father experiences that "they had to give some up so the rest won 't die". Unfortunately, the Germans in factual events over time did dispose their connections with Jews and murdered almost all of them as time progressed (e.g., Haskel 's family member Pesach being double crossed and murdered). I would rate this novel a 10 because it 's fascinating and is a true story of survival and desperation to which we know today as some of the most vile acts against humanity done by Nazi Germany and its political leadership. Furthermore, Valdek Spiegelman 's story is definitely of value as there are not many who can actually share these stories in modern time (after WWII) and be able to tell them for others to know of what had happened to many Jewish people during the rise of Nazi Germany. Furthermore, this novel helped me understand historical events I already knew about and gave me a first person’s view of those same events through the experiences of someone else’s life who lived through
