During my watch many mistakes were made training the Special Operations Officer. Special Forces recruited officers from all the military branches and it was not uncommon to find “A” Detachment commanders from all the combat arms; armor, artillery, engineers and of course, infantry. There were even signal and chemical corps officers serving in command positions in SF. The officer in command at SOG’s Radio Relay Site Hickory was an engineer officer when it was over-run. The only training SF officers had in Special Forces operations was a gentleman’s course at Fort Bragg that required little physical training.
