Summary: This chapter outlines what standardized testing is, how it should be administered, and how it should be scored. Most standardized testing has several criteria when scoring and administrating these tests. The chapter also spoke of the different types of norms such as; national, special group and local norms. These norms give the normal percentage of how many students will score on these tests. Norms should be current and have good sampling. The other types of standardized tests are aptitudes test that determine a student ability or readiness. All standardized tests are used at the local, state, and national levels. This was the first time it had been administered in our state. I believe California was one of the few states to administer these types of tests. The test was based on national standard of what high students should know after their junior year in high school (I was a senior when I took it, since my junior year the test did not exist). The school I attended had a huge population of ELL students and many of them were not able to pass the tests which caused the California Board of Education to take a second look at this test. I was able to pass the test in 1995, but I cannot recall what was actually on the test. My fellow classmates who were not able to pass the test were able to take the test again. I am not sure if the California Board of Education allow waivers for those who cannot pass since the test was so new. I believe Alaska implemented a high school exit exam but still doesn’t use those scores to stop students from graduation from high school. Alaska had issues with the tests because much of the material covered were not learned by Alaska high school students. California had the same issues but was more concerned about ELL students being held back because of their lack of
