A clear example in the video that shows social concept is obedience. “Obedience is a form of compliance that occurs when people follow direct commands usually from someone in position of authority” (Weiten, 2017, p. 440). According to Weiten (2017), Stanley Milgram (1963), was theorist that underpinned …show more content…
The first theorist to underpin this theory was Fritz Heider in 1958 (as cited in Weiten, 2017). He believed that people’s behaviour is influenced either internally which is self-focused and within one’s self which we can control or externally which is factors out of someone’s control such as, the environment (Volz, Schuotz, & Von-Cramon, 2014). For those individuals who don’t have a stable internal and external dimension lack of performance occurs which results in failure. However, those who have a stable internal and external dimension are more likely to succeed (Myers, Staats, & Gino, 2014). Internal and external attributions can relate back to the wheelbarrow video as the father just can’t construct the wheelbarrow due to lack of experience or self-doubt which is known as internal attributions. As a result the father experiences mood changes and lack of confidence. This is known as an unstable cause as mood behaviours are only temporary (Weiten, 2017). Whereas, the external attribution in the video could have been that when the wheelbarrow was brought, there might not have been all the parts. Which would have resulted in the father getting more frustrated and would have made the task a lot more difficult as it is a permanent issue (Weiten, …show more content…
According to Thornton-wells (2012), people learn different actions and behaviours through active experiences, observing others and modelling from other people’s behaviours. Which helps with memory and improving attention span (Yussen, 1979). The theorist who underpinned this concept is Albert Bandura in 1961 (as cited in Weiten, 2017). He theorised that children who observed a teacher beating a doll will then influence them to do the same, which is known as the Bobo doll experiment. He found that children that were exposed to this aggression were more likely to show aggression (McLeod, 2011). Furthermore, Bandura believes that for any observing and modelling behaviour to take place four conditions need to occur. These include attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation. Attention is when he or she notices the behaviour of another and pays attention (Stone, 2016). An example of this in the video is when the father notices the daughter using the instructions. According to Stone (2016), Retention is when they store the behaviour in which they observed in their memory. In the Wheelbarrow video the father pays attention to the daughter reading the instructions and then stores it in his memory. Reproduction is when the individual copies the behaviour they have observed (Stone, 2016). Which is emphasized in the video when the father begins to follow the instruction instead of
