In the following essay I’m going to compare and contrast two 17th century artworks – “Las Meninas” by Diego Velazquez (1656) and “The Allegory of Painting” by Johannes Vermeer. Paintings depict artists working on a portrait, however, in Velasquez’s work the viewer is the person who is being painted and in Vermeer’s the viewer is just an observer of the artistic process. The only reason the observer knows that he is the center object of the future fictional painting is in the mirror on the back wall. The couple in the reflection is King Philip IV and his wife, Mariana. (Foucault, 8).…
Leonardo da Vinci’s “Virgin of the Rocks” and Mary Cassatt’s “After the Bath” are two pieces of art I will be comparing and contrasting. [HELP] “Virgin of the Rocks”, also known as, “Madonna of the Rocks” are two pieces of art composed by Leonardo da Vinci, who was a Renaissance artist. They were created in return for a commission by the Fraternity of Immaculate Conception on April 25th, 1483. This painting was going to be in the Church of San Francesco Grande for an altarpiece that would hang in the center surrounded by angels by other artists. The Louvre version is the first one that was created solely by Leonardo around 1483-1486.…
No Expression Vs Outwardly Expressed When you hear the words Baroque and Neoclassical, what comes to mind? If you thought of the words flamboyant vs. simplicity, then you are well on your way to understanding the two styles of art that will be discussed in this paper. Baroque style was known for the realness and emotional ties that go with every painting or sculpture that is made with that style. Meanwhile, Neoclassical style is more on historical viewpoint with a decorative way. The painting, "La Grande Odalisque" by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, and the sculpture, "The Ecstasy of St. Teresa" by Gianlorenzo Bernini, both portray females in exotic poses.…
The two paintings I chose to compare and contrast were Le Dejeuner sur l’herbe and The Birth of Venus. Both paintings were created in different time periods. Le Dejeuner sur l’herbe was created in 1862-1863 by Èdouard Manet. The Birth of Venus was created in 1484-1486 by Sandro Botticelli. When you look at both paintings there are many similarities you can point out just by looking at them.…

Paintings have been used as a representation of people since human race originated. Through time it has become very lifelike and realistic due to the advancement in materials and techniques used by some talented artists. This paper discusses two types of paintings through their similarities and differences, as the first one being David’s Oath of the Horatii, 1784. Oil on canvas, 10’ 10” * 13’ 11”. This paper will discuss eight different images from eight different locations based on their themes as well as photographs and images from Exhibition 100+ and Exhibition American Modernism. The different artwork for discussion in the paper comes from China, Italy, and Cyprus. The eight artworks from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts were quite fascinating and poignant for me in terms of their richness in history, culture, religion, and nature. Every piece that I picked held a special message and an emblem of information that put into perspective that I learned in class.…
From the Early Renaissance to the culmination of the High Renaissance art goes through a great evolution in techniques and in perception. Light and shadow are more often exemplified within the artworks of this era and it also truly did bring about a realistic depiction of life within art. Along with that there is the great advances in perception due to the popular use of linear perspective, which gave a genuine depth and space to artworks of this time. Due to the great gains and expansions of ideas within art techniques during this time, artist for generations owe a great deal to the many “masters” throughout the Renaissance…
Comparison and Contrast Essay The beautiful things we physically see are beautiful only because they participate in the more general Form of Beauty. This Form of Beauty in itself is invisible, eternal, and unchanging, unlike things in our physical world that can grow old and lose their beauty . The Forms audited a world of total beauty outside time and space. The Allegory of The Cave, an ancient script, has an ideal point of view on the topic of self-awareness.…
Milestone Two Final Explaining how the theme of beauty is expressed in contemporary ideas and pieces of art, for the final project I will contrast two works of art. Starting with the literary art piece, an epic poem written by Angelo Poliziano, named Stanze per la Giostra, in 1480 Italy. The visual work being a painting by Sandra Botticelli titled The Birth of Venus. Botticelli's The Birth of Venus was painted in approximately 1485 in Italy and it carries an classical style. Using both the visual and literary outlets I will compare the theme with the mood of the works of art.…
I was drawn to this painting due to its simplistic design and vibrant colors that forces the viewer to keep looking. The painting attracted my attention and every time I looked at it, I felt as if I found something new about it every time. As I continued to examine the painting its complexity continued to grow with every minute that I looked at it. Also, the size of the painting was large compared to the others in the gallery immediately making me feel that the painting had more significance and prestige than the others around it. The combination of the designs, the color and the size, overall made this painting an obvious choice for my research paper.…
In The Symposium, Diotima asserted that the Form of Beauty contained four main particular intrinsic features. I will begin by explaining the four main features of Beauty itself . In order to identify and mimic the creative prospects of the work that elicit detail, I had to admire certain elements and suspect their relevance to the piece, where only then I could interpret them and advance my own creation from the techniques that I observed. While we study many beautiful pieces of art throughout the entirety of this semester, between the originality, economic struggles, and over complications that are exhibited within this work, I believe this work is the most advanced of which we saw, considering the region from whence it…
In this essay I will compare and contrast using contextual factors two murals. The first is Emperor Justinian, Bishop Maximus and Attendants, a mosaic on the wall of the Sanctuary in Italy from the Byzantine era. The second being Raphael 's School of Athens, found on the wall of the Apostolic Palace, Rome painted during the Renaissance. Emperor Justinian, Bishop Maximianus and Attendants, was created for religious purposes, as was a lot of the art produced during the early Byzantine Empire. In 324 CE Constantine ‘ the Great’ was a Christian emperor who set up Constantinople, originally Byzantine, a city in the east as another city to rule Christianity from, alongside the capital Rome.…
The scene of Renaissance art is not exactly how many paint it today. While during the fifteenth century Renaissance a plethora of art as well as artists were created, the concept of ‘artistry’ was completely foreign. Today, when we see Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” and Michelangelo’s statue of David, we identify both as art and comparably we recognize the beauty of the art forms that they are. However, during the Renaissance, Botticelli, a painter, and Michelangelo, a sculptor, would have been recognized as having two very distinct professions and comparison of the two would be nonexistent.…
