The setting of both the stories play an impact on the point trying to be made and also it gives a better understanding of which essay is more effective. In Brent Staples "Black men and Public Spaces" the time period in which he encountered all these situations were in the mid seventies which is more recent. Jesus Colon's situation occurred in the 1950's which is significant to his train of thought throughout the story. Colon believe the women would react a certain way if he helped her, and he had a reason to thing this because during this time the civil rights movement started to originate. The white people during this time may have felt a certain way towards anyone who wasn't of white skin color. Although Jesus Colon is trying to show the Prejudice within people but the time period does not really emphasize the point being made because during this time it was expected of people of color to be hesitant towards white people. On the other hand, Staples essay takes place in more recent times where racism has calmed down. The point being made by Staples is more effective because it shows racism is still around even after all the things that occurred in the previous years.
