Here is a look into the different styles and types of management. The goal is to be able to consider being a manager and decide whether the position is fitting. This will be determined by looking at the skills required then deciding whether any of them are possessed. This will also introduce to the types of management then lead on to see which categories certain skills and personal beliefs fall under. While considering these aspects of management keep in mind there are multiple ways of going about managing. Someone’s personality may fall under many of the listed categories. The first management style which will be discussed is an autocratic management style. This is a common style, although the effectiveness may vary. Autocratic management may seem old school to many people but ultimately it is up to the manager and their personality whether it is successful or not. “The autocrat tends to make all the decisions without any reference or need for subordinate input” (Exploring Management Styles, 2011). The manager wants things done just like it’s told without any questions, says Jackson (2013). He includes this may make skilled workers full of ideas feel resentful. It can also make less skilled workers always rely on you for an answer, never developing their skills. As you can see this style can generate either a positive or a negative outcome. Autocratic management could lead to employees losing motivation because they have no say in what is happening in the company, they are not able to be innovative or intuitive. This could lead to negative business outcomes. “However, if your manager has a great personality, experience, and exposure, the decisions made by him or her could be better than collective decision making” (Management Styles, 2014). If this type of management style seems ideal, I would consider other options; it may be important to use this type of management style while a company is dealing with a crisis but opt for another style on a typical day, says Jackson (2013). As a manager with these kinds of morals employees may become bored or rely on you to solve all their problems. Does a manager want to be the person who does everything? Or are there other ways to direct yourself and others to make things better for the company? Consider the aspect of micromanagement which will come along with the roll as an autocratic manager. This is important to think about, seeing as most people do not enjoy being micromanaged. An autocratic style of management is for employees with no desire or sense of direction in a
