Key Attributes of a Successful Manager
Successful managers must have a variety of different skills. Three skills that are beneficial to have are technical skills, conceptual skills, and human or interpersonal skills. Technical skills as described by William’s book, Principles of Management, are techniques and knowledge required to complete a task. Conceptual skills are the ability to see and understand the organization as a whole. Human or interpersonal skills is having the ability to work well with others. As a General Manager, Maribel is responsible for setting objectives, and then making sure these objectives are being achieved for the hotel. Maribel has very strong technical skills in the hotel field, she has worked for the hotel for over 9 years and has moved her way up from a front desk agent to the general manager. Throughout the day, Maribel leads her management team to succeed and plans all the upcoming events that are happening for that month. Anytime an agent has a question or feels uncertain, Maribel is always there to help. This is an example as to why Maribel also has very strong human skills, and agents feel comfortable enough to discuss any issues they are having, with her. Maribel is the general manager of the hotel, therefore she controls all the lower management. Anthony struggles to give the satisfaction the guest is looking for, whether it is compensation or just a sincere apology, this displays poor human skills.
As a leader of the meeting room, Nancy uses her human skills to charm clients interested in the space. By doing so, Nancy brings in a lot of good business to the hotel.
