Wichita State University Breast cancer is defined as the uncontrolled growth of breast cells. Cancer happens as a result of mutations, or abnormal changes, in the genes responsible for regulating the growth of cells and keeping them healthy. In a healthy individual, their bodies replace themselves. The new cells take over when the old cells die out. But in a patient with cancer, mutations occurred causing some genes to turn off and others to turn on in a cell. As a result, the cell now has the ability to keep dividing uncontrollably, producing more mutated cells which then causes a tumor. Tumors can be benign or malignant. They’re different ways that physician do this. Some of them include a mammogram which is just an x-ray of the breast. Next, is an Ultrasound exam this procedure uses high-energy sound waves. The sound waves bounce off internal tissues and organs and make echoes. The echoes form a picture of body tissues called a sonogram. Finally, you can have a biopsy. A biopsy is the removal of cells or tissues so that they can be further examined. A biopsy can determine if the cancer cells are estrogen or progesterone positive, HER2/neu positive, or multigene. If the cancer cells are progesterone/estrogen positive than an anti-progesterone/estrogen medication is administered. These types of cancers have a tendency to grow more quickly. Now let’s pretend the cancer is HER2/neu positive in this case the cancer is more likely to spread to other parts of the body and grow more quickly. Treatment for breast cancer if very personalized. A treatment that might have worked for your friend not might not be the best way to go for you. Why? Because breast cancer can be in different stages, Her2/neu positive, estrogen/progesterone positive, type of breast cancer, or how fast the tumor is growing. The five type of standard treatment that are used include: surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and targeted therapy. It is important to know that some treatments for breast cancer can cause side effects months or years after treatment has
