During my visit to Wal-Mart’s toy aisle I noticed that construction toys, cars, and action figures were all in the boy aisle; however, the girl was mostly pink with Barbie’s, kitchen sets, and baby dolls. Doing research I then learned that Wal-Mart is portraying “Gender Based Marketing.” Wal-Mart’s choice of using the color blue for the boy’s aisle and pink section for the girl’s aisle traditionally known to be classified to a particular gender. Toys packaging is targeted through color, wording, and images portrayed on them; such as, pink suggest it is a girl’s toy whereas blue packaging suggest it is a boy’s toy. Boys and girls toys suggest that gender; such as, the boy should not cross to the girls section to select toy or toys and vice versa. …show more content…
I really think gender marketing of toys plays a major role in bullying; a lot of children are teased if seen with a different gender toy. For example, if a boy is seen with a Barbie doll, he would be teased for having associated himself with a toy that belongs to the opposite sex. Even if you go to the Wal-Mart website they even have the toys categorized by girl and boy. After doing research I learned that Toys R Us is the only major toy company that has stopped categorizing products as boys or girl’s toys on its website now you have to shop by age; Toys R Us made their entire in store and online website gender
