Before the natural rights, the monarch was the center of the French culture. People had to sacrifice themselves and obey the king’s order. However, John Locke, who was one of the three main enlighteners, believed that the government is supposed to protect the natural rights. The people are responsible to counter the government if the government ignores people’s natural rights, because there is nothing more important than the individuals. The French Revolution also resulted in the reform of the government. The 3rd estate, which ran by the bourgeoisie, established their own National Assembly on June 17, 1789 because they wanted more power from the 1st and 2nd estate. The 3rd estate soon issued the reform that all men were free and equal in France. They also started to write a constitution after they built their own assembly. Some people doubt that whether the French Revolution qualified to be a revolution since France has no government during the Reign of Terro.
