To accomplish this NASA created the Saturn V rocket, which was basically a three stage rocket meant to boost the actual spacecraft out of the Earth's atmosphere and into an orbit where the spacecraft to boost towards the moon. This design allowed for the astronauts to leave Earth, reach the moon, and return safely. This design was far larger and more advanced than Russian spacecraft designs. The success of the Apollo 11 programs mission was then momentous as it changed the world.
The historical event was marked by celebration across the globe as people all around the world watched Neil Armstrong on their televisions, and heard him say the legendary words “That's one small step for man, One giant leap for mankind”. This also marked the end of the space race as Russian space agency could and would no longer compete with NASA. The achievement of the moon did not end the yearning for space exploration though as public support continued throughout the years after and included the launches of several more Apollo missions. These launches marked some of the effects of the Apollo program on the …show more content…
In the beginning both programs were locked in a struggle for superiority over the other. With the Russians launch of the Sputnik I pushing the United States into action and starting a technological, and scientific struggle for proof of superiority. In the end though the Apollo 11 mission proved that the United States had overcome the Russians because after the Apollo 11 mission they still had trouble reaching the moon. Even though this did mark the end of the space race it did create the beginnings for a far better future with improving relations and encounters with Russia. This is seen afterwards when there were NASA missions where both countries space programs cooperated together, which showed the beginnings of more friendly U.S. Russia political relations which was the beginning of the end for the cold war. These political changes could be seen in the missions right after the Apollo 11 mission with the Apollo-Soyuz partnership where an Apollo mission team met up with Russian spacecraft in
