In both primary documents Jean de Brébeuf’s Advice to Jesuit Missionaries in New France and the Spanish Monarchy’s Requerimiento describes the interactions and intentions on how to handle the Natives. The philosophies on how both to viewed the Native’s existing culture and traditions were vastly different. The French integrated and created alliances rather than the Spanish which segregated themselves from Native’s different cultures, threatened and extracted resources. The document Requerimiento was issued by the Spanish Crown in 1513 and read to all natives that the conquistadors encountered.…
The text directly relates to the test item, “otherness and ethnocentrism”, “western notions of the attributes of an organized society”, and also “Spaniards response to linguistic barriers with Native American peoples.” Villagrá construes the Spaniards actions to gain the approval of the king, yet the truth lies within the lines of poetry he writes. Throughout Villagrá’s violent recount of the founding of New Mexico, he uses comparisons and conflicting language when it comes to the depiction of Natives and the attacks that were brought forth upon them. In the canto III, Villagrá details the vast and beautiful land which is New Mexico.…
The subject of race and its impact on Spanish’s social structure does not have a definitive answer; Patricia Seed and Rodney Anderson are two examples of different opinions regarding the matter. Seed conducted a study to prove race impacted Spanish society during the colonial era, “the aim of this study is to examine the extent to which the racial labels continued to be associated with the division of labor in the viceregal capital of New Spain towards the end of the colonial period.” However, Anderson contested Seed’s hypothesis by stating, “class factors relations had superseded racial ones as the primary indicators of socioeconomic status by the middle of the eighteenth century.”…
In 1895, what was it to be Basque, and how did it differ from being Spanish? In Sabino Arana’s 1895 paper entitled “What Are We?” we see Arana sets out to define these differences between his people the Vizcaya (a providence in the Basque country), from the Spanish people through an impassioned article published in a Basque newspaper. This writing was penned directly to the Vizcayans in the 1895 Bizkaitarra (Bilbao) newspaper article published on June 16th, 30th, and July 7th. Arana’s reputation leads current day readers to apply the thoughts and ideals to all the Basque regions at the time. This persuasive essay leans on heavily on pathos to convince the Basque people of their national supremacy as opposed to the Spanish inferiority.…
As European countries never lose its chance to control the discovered country, they didn’t give an opportunity to South America as well. Around 1494, the Spain and Portugal had already conquered most of South America where Portugal took control on the east, and Spain to the west. Unlikely, these European conquistadors never thought of taking over each other countries because of the treaty of Tordesillas. The Portuguese controlled the Brazil which its resources such as sugar cane, help them with their economy even though the Brazil was boiling for them to live. The Portuguese would sell the land of Brazil to the wealthy people who were interested from Portugal.…
ow the conquistadors merely lower class Spainards seeking income and a new life. However, the helped settle and colonize Spain's acquisitions in the New World. Also, the conquistadors didn't bring their women with them from Spain and usually didn't have a wife or family. So, they often had children by indigenous women creating the Mestizo class and people. Now, the conquistadors also didn't always stick around to raise their kids or went back to Spain or brought their family to the…
The Louisiana Purchase was an offer from the French that opened up many beneficial opportunities for the growing United States. Land west of the Eastern seaboard was territory claimed by the French; however after the Seven Year’s War France had lost its dominance over the land and transferred control to Spain. France had later found itself in need of funding for the war they were fighting in Europe. The United States, with their growing…
From this experience, the Spanish understood “the importance of translators and language itself in the process of encounter and conquest” (Schwartz 40). With a solid base for translation established through Aguillar and Malinche, the Spanish began “to differentiate between the various ethnicities and political loyalties of the indigenous people” (Schwartz 42). The ethnography they learned from the exchange of gifts between Cortes and other indigenous leaders also established a great knowledge of potential wealth as well as a divide and…

Barcelona, Spain is considered the capital of Catalonia—a culturally autonomous region, notable for its desire to become a separate nation. The origins of this unique identity can best be understood through the Annales School assertion that earliest histories are formative of culture. The story of Giufré el Pílos (Wilfred the Hairy) is the most influential of early Catalonian histories, and presents the Catalonian values of bravery, social order, and national autonomy. The durability of this story serves as a testament to its importance; its plot and its values have been repackaged over the ages, serving as an argument for a separate Catalonian nation. The story of Wilfred the Hairy is comprised of both factual and fictitious information.…
The motives of wealth can be seen as a natural desire of man, and therefore would entice both the Spanish and the English. However, the different religious efforts and the vastly different treatment of the natives illustrate the different cultures and beliefs of the Spanish and the…
Low Lifespan ` Native Hawaiians have been statistically shown to have a lower lifespan. In 2005 the average age for Native Hawaiians was 24.6 years which is the lowest in the state compared to the median age for Non-Native Hawaiians that was 38.5 (Naya, 2007, 15). This low representation of elderly Native Hawaiians can be related back to their low socioeconomic status. It has been shown that Native Hawaiians in general have a higher rate of obesity, many chronic conditions, and greater poverty than many other ethnic groups in Hawai’i (Ko’opua, et. al., 2011).…
What the Visigoths did not know, was that Spain was already a mixed culture with a very large Jewish community. When the Visigoths converted to Roman Christianity, they began to harass and antagonize the Jewish community. While the Visigoths were persecuting the Jews, a new religion known as Islam, was born that united Arabic tribes, such as the Berbers. These Arabic tribes would crossover into the Strait of Gibraltar and defeat the Visigoth King of Spain. To help them in their conquest of the peninsula, the Jews welcomed Muslims leaders.…
Furthermore, there has been a change in Catalan nationalism because of the disappointment of Spain and their ignorance of their attempt to be independent. The Catalans are tired of justifying Catalonia’s national status and language, therefore, have abandoned all hope that the rest of Spain will listen and understand their concerns within a multinational Spanish state from a political, cultural and economic perspective(CNN). In addition, Catalan nationalism has been seeking agreements with the Spanish nationalists for about 15 years now, in the attempt to stabilize a place for the Catalan nation within the Spanish state. However, this doesn’t change the fact that independence supporters still exist but they are mostly a minority group within the Catalonian society. According to the last election on October 2013, conducted by the Catalan Statistics Institute, 57% of Catalan citizens would vote for the independence in a hypothetical referendum.…
