The battle of Gettysburg was one of the bloodiest and most horrific battles fought in the Civil War, and the aftermath of the war impacted many as well. The battle was a Union victory, stopping General Robert Lee’s second invasion of the north. It was the turning point in the war for the south, turning the course of the war in the Union’s favor. It became clear to the Union that they were going to win, and the Confederate morale was shattered. There were about 51,000 casualties on both sides, and they both suffered. Even though there were 20,000 more Union casualties, the battle of Gettysburg was the beginning of the end for the Confederate effort. The result of the battle influenced Abraham Lincoln to write the Gettysburg Address, which inspired many to carry on the legacy of the fallen soldiers and unite the nation. He could either restock the fort and take over the fort, or let the south restock the fort. He chose to restock the fort and the Confederates opened fire on Fort Sumter and the war began. Lincoln also issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, after three bloody years of war, intending to weaken the Confederacy. The Emancipation Proclamation declared that all slaves in the South be freed. After this proclamation, the focus of the war was changed from preserving the Union to also freeing all of the slaves. This was a significant action in the Civil War, completely changing the aim of the war. It also helped to prevent involvement of foreign nations such as Britain and France in the war. Abraham Lincoln also gave the Gettysburg Address, dedicated to the fallen soldiers, which moved many. This speech inspired the people to carry on the legacy of the soldiers and finish what they started, ending the war and uniting the nation once more.
