Prejudice is when a person is biased against another person. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is about a southern family that is growing up in a hard time, and the narrator of the book is a small child named Scout Finch. Her brother Jem is older and is her protector and he has to deal with a lot of issues when Atticus is not around. You get to see Jem grow over time and become more polite. Their father, Atticus takes on a very serious court case about Tom Robinson an African American man that was accused of beating Mayella Ewell. As the book proceeds Scout, Jem and Dill their summer friend investigate a very mysterious neighbor that leaves the kids clues to find but in the end he turns out to be a nice man towards the Finch family. The Tom Robinson trial is where racism most occur in the novel because the townspeople treated blacks very poorly. As the trail went on I noticed from both book and movie the blacks had to sit up in the balcony and the whites got to sit up front in all the action. In this novel, there is a character named Mr. Raymond who is a white name with biracial kids and even though he is white Maycomb sees him as black and doesn't really accept him. When I was reading the book the character used a lot or raised words. Atticus is the lawyer for the trial and he chooses to be on the case because he thinks he would be the only person in Maycomb to give Tom a fair shot. In the book, Atticus quotes “I'll do my best to love everybody.”(Lee pg 107).There is also a lot of characters that don’t think racism is ok like the Finch family by example.
