Trafficker’s exploits and take advantages of individuals for the purpose of gaining profits from the forced labor, and commercial sex (National Human Trafficking Resource Center, n.d.). These individuals lure their victims by exploiting and manipulating their victim. Traffickers prey on people who are vulnerable, and looking for a better life or lack employment opportunities (National Human Trafficking Resource Center, n.d.). Traffickers make promises to their victims that they can provide good jobs in other places. Some victims are even sold by their own parents, husbands, boyfriends and others are kidnapped (Duncan, 2010). Traffickers are not solely strangers. Traffickers includes individual pimps, family operations, businesses, and criminal organized operations (National Human Trafficking Resource Center, n.d.). The traffickers often share similar ethnic or cultural background that allows them to better understand and exploit their victims. Any myths or misconception an individual may have must be removed in order to properly understand and help victims. Unfortunately, there are many of them that to this date people still believe to be true. For example, many believe that victims are only foreign nationals or immigrants; however, that is not true. As mentioned above, victims include all types of life, even Americans. In fact, the federal definition of human trafficking includes both United States citizens and foreign nationals (National Human Trafficking Resource Center, n.d.). Additional myths are that human trafficking involves some form of transportation but that is not true. Human trafficking does not require transportation (Duncan, 2010). Lastly, many believe that victims will seek help, but the reality is that victims will not seek help due to fear, lack of trust, self-blame, etc. Once an individual understands what human trafficking is and drops any misconception they have, it will be easier to combat and see the warning signs of a
