On July 17 1984, President Ronal Raegan signed the National Minimum Drinking Age Bill. This bill banned the purchase and public possession of alcohol by individuals under the age of 21, however it did not ban consumption. The enforcement of this bill as law was handed over to all the federal states and since then each state has different laws regarding consumption, nevertheless purchase and possession of alcohol by people under 21 is still a crime. It has been more than three decades and it is still a big challenge to enforce this law. State government has had minimal success with the implementation of the law. Decisions of adolescents are mostly influenced by peer group and emotional needs. Consumption of alcohol slows down one’s ability to take decisions which make an individual to poor choices while being intoxicated. Some people resort to getting drunk and having fun in the clubs while some other people are involved in criminal activities. If the legal age of drinking is reduced to 18, adolescents will have an early inclination to indulge in senseless activities which might even involve felonious crime. Instead of being creative and scholarly they start to flunk classes, slack on studying and eventually drop out of the school. While this time should be utilized towards empowering creative thoughts and making better life choices which will benefit an individual’s future and ultimately the society. Alcohol has been known to be a leading contributor of road accidents and injuries. Adolescents can get his/her driving license as early as sixteen years old. This is the time to learn the rules of driving and getting hands-on experience on the road. Drunk driving is already a serious problem among the adults. Adolescents influenced to alcohol can also get behind the wheels and can endanger the life of himself/herself and lives around him/her.
