Music from is the organizing principle in music; its basic elements are repetition, contrast, and variation. Repetition puts the music in our heads while contrast catches our interest and variations keeps us from hearing the same thing every time. There are two basic forms in music Binary form and Ternary from. Binary from is the musical from (A-B). Ternary from is the musical form (A-B-A). Music has many different styles now, but it used to be primarily two different styles, secular or sacred. Secular music is worldly music not pertaining to the church. Sacred music is strictly religious based music. These two styles of music led to the creation of genres. Style has been defined as the characteristic way an artwork is presented. Genre are branches of styles in my opinion. Genres are like opera or symphony. For example, Symphony is a genre designation for a standard form usually a four-movement orchestral work. Music styles changes with every period of time. The authors wrote that music started with Gregorian chant (600-850), went to the Romanesque period (850-1150), then to the Renaissance period (1450-1600), to the Baroque period (1600-1750), to the Classical period (1750-1825), to the Romantic period (1820-1900), and through the twentieth century to now.
