“The FBI is the primary intelligence and law enforcement agency within the United States and the only member of the United States Intelligence Community with broad authority over acts on U.S. soil.” The FBI has the lead domestic role in investigating international terrorist threats to the United States as well as conducting counterintelligence activities. The agency is also responsible for coordinating the Intelligence Communities domestic counterintelligence and counterterrorism activities. The Bureau is also responsible for gathering and analyzing information that is crucial to understanding threats to the nation. They share this information to certain FBI intelligence and law enforcement partners. The FBI must gather, analyze, exploit, and disseminate its intelligence in order to make threats toward the United States less menacing. Federal, state, local, and even tribal partners are an integral to disrupt plots that are harmful. The NSA works with the Central Security Service which was established in 1972, 20 years after the NSA was established. The CSS was created to promote a full partnership between the NSA and the cryptologic elements of the armed forces. The NSA/CSS has many government wide responsibilities which include providing products and services to the Department of Defense, the Intelligence Community, government agencies, industry partners, and select allies and coalition partners. They also deliver critical strategic and tactical information to war planner and and war fighters. Being a key member of the Intelligence Community requires a great deal of confidentiality, that is why the NSA/CSS has an Information Assurance and Signals Intelligence missions set in place. The Information Assurance mission confronts the challenge of preventing foreign enemies from gaining access to sensitive: national security information. The Signals Intelligence mission collects, processes, and disseminates intelligence information for intelligence and counterintelligence purposes and to support military operations.
