The exposition is the first stop on the journey through the plot of a story. During this first stop at the exposition, the reader learns background information, characters, time, and most importantly setting. On page 293, Edgar Allan Poe expresses, “ I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country, and at length found myself, as the shades of evening drew on, within view of the House of Usher.” Without the setting, the exposition would be left unfinished and the story would have no point. The setting in this story is a childhood house. Everyone has had a childhood house, this allows them to really relate and put themselves into the story.
