2. This sculpture is of a single person, the Aztec goddess of earth and fire, Coatlicue. Her story says that her jealous children attacked her after conceiving her son, Huitzilopochtli, god of war. He was birthed fully grown and armed during the attack. Though he defended her, she was decapitated and dismembered. She is depicted with two snake heads in place of her own. The Aztecs were Mesoamerican people of the 14th-16th centuries. They were also known as the Mexica and lived in central Mexico. Their capital was Tenochtitlan and is now where Mexico City stands. The Aztecs were a strong, efficient and evolved civilization. Each city had its own government and the military continued to conquest new territories. The Aztec civilization was composed of approximately 15 million people living in 500 towns or cities. They lived off an efficient agriculture system and traded with foreign countries. Houses were built with adobe roofs, painted white, for cooling purposes during the hot months. Due to their law enforcement, the capital of Tenochtitlan, which housed over 30,000 people, was clean and relatively crime free. Punishments such as fines or fees were imposed on minor law breakers. The fall of the Aztec empire was caused by famine, and disease when European conquistador Hernan Cortes conquered and ruined the Aztec Capital in 1521 and built Mexico City on top of the
