This is a very obvious theme because the entire book that the maids write is their way of taking a stand against the white bosses. All of the maids, along with Miss Skeeter, wrote a book telling what the maids had been through to show that they are not being treated properly. All of the maids are tired of being discriminated against and being treated poorly simply because of the color of their skin. If there were not people who were willing to take a stand, nothing would have ever changed and African Americans would still be treated terribly today. Taking a stand is also shown when Minny stands up to Hilly. Hilly spread lies about Minny so instead of just accepting what was being done to her, she took a stand and got her revenge on Hilly. If Minny had not defended herself, Hilly would continue to spread lies which would keep Minny from getting another job. Minny eventually tells her new boss about what she did to Hilly and knowing that helped her new boss also be able to avoid conflict with Hilly (397).
