The character of Clair is portrayed as a nag. Unfortunately, that is the image in which our society views our mothers and wives. In an episode entitled “Playdates,” Claire nags her husband insisting that he does not pick up the tab at the end of their double date with these rich couples they met with on vacation. Society laughs at women who spend a lot of effort to support their families whatever way they can and when they complain, they are labeled “nags.” Another character in the Modern Family that is greatly stereotyped is Gloria Prichett who is married to her much older husband Jay Prichett. Gloria 's character is what most Americans perceive to be the reality concerning Latin American women. As Latino women are seen as being “passive, dependent on men... hot-tempered... and sexy” (qtd. in Correa 427). The character of Gloria is projected in a way as to make the viewers laugh at her inability to pronounce certain words correctly. In an episode entitled “Planes, Trains and Cars,” Gloria and Jay were having a conversation, and she was talking about why she does not want to fly in a helicopter but she was finding it difficult in recalling the English word for helicopter. More often than not, these gender roles depicted in these shows are hardly noticed by it views but are subconsciously picked up and acted upon as we try to behave or talk like our favorite
