“Although major attention in communication study is given to verbal messages, studies show that nonverbal elements can account for more than 90% of the total meaning of a message.” (Lehman, DuFrene, & Walker, 2016 pg 22) The three types of non-verbal communication are metacommunication, visual kinesic communication and vocal kinesic communication. Metacommunication is defined as “a nonverbal message that, although not expressed in words, accompanies a message that is expressed in words.” (Lehman, DuFrene, & Walker, 2016 pg 23) Meta communication is encompasses the tone of voice the message is given in, the body language, gestures and facial expressions that are included with the message. An example of metacommunication that I experience regularly with two teenagers, is the question of “How was your day?” and I receive a response like, “eh, it was ok”, with an upset face. If I just processed the statement on the face value as ok, then I would be missing a huge part of the response. (Lehman, DuFrene, & Walker, 2016 pg 33) The ineffective meeting video has trouble with most of these factors. The most prevalent issues in the video are maintaining order and managing conflict, in my opinion.
The stage that the group is currently in storming which is when the team members deal conflicting personalities, goals and ideas. The lack of managing conflict in this stage will stop the group from advancing to the next stage of norming. (Lehman, DuFrene, & Walker, 2016 pg 31)
A meeting must have order to be successful and useful. This meeting is completely out of control with individuals interrupting each other, no formal structure for acceptable behavior, lacking focus on the meeting purpose and time wasting activities. The lead should have assigned an individual to take notes instead of asking for volunteers, because it took additional time for someone to finally volunteer. The meeting chair must speak up in the meeting and maintain the order, but in the video he is very timid and allows unacceptable actions.
