Most people deem that picture books are straightforwardly used to beguile children in their leisure time. Nevertheless, the previous statement is not utterly truthful: these books are not only advisable for the entertainment but education as well - particularly infant education- . This paper aims at showing the importance of picture books in the growth of people, particularly in the one of those who need special schooling. In order to attest it, the importance of the image in a picture book and of picture book itself will be explained; in addition, multimodal approach and how picture books work in this methodology will be demonstrated. For instance, Zoo, by Anthony Browne, where the author enlightens the reader about the cruelty of the zoos, which behave towards animals as prisoners. Thus, by reading this book, readers become aware of the fact that animals are living beings- as we are- and for this reason, they should not be treated as slaves of human beings, but as friends. Another example of picture books for educational purposes is a Spanish picture book “Un culete independiente “, by José Luis Cortés, where the author teaches readers- who are supposedly children- how to behave in a proper way; the writer does not use the conventional method to teach the ideal demeanour to children, nonetheless, he creates a funny story to accomplish his goal. Apart from these books, a known English picture book, Piggy book by Anthony Browne, should be also taken into account because it is a criticism about stereotypes; the mother is not the only one to have to do the housework but all members of the family have to. Therefore, this type of picture books is considered very useful for both children and adults. Another usual message in picture books is equality: some books are written with the objective of breaking the stereotypes. In other words, multimodal approach defends the idea that the word is not the only way to communicate but there are many moods which may be used such as the images. For this reason, picture books are useful when educating people- notably those who need a special education-.
“In fact, the relationship of words and pictures as it is found in all good picture books may be of particular significance in the education of children into mature human beings. The basic, distinguishing peculiarity of picture-book storytelling is that it tells of the same events by means of two quite different media and therefore in two quite different ways. In doing so, it mirrors the process by which human beings come to know their world, better than does any other imaginative experience” ( Nodelman, 1988; p.283).
What Nodelman claims in the previous report is that, in fact, reading picture books is a great educational tool for children because they bring the children to another world, so, by reading this, children- and adults alike- do not only learn words but they also amuse
