At 6:06 the first guests started to arrive. Two guests entered, one of which was the person whose birthday was being celebrated. One of the guests said “Happy birthday Robin!” There were two hosts and myself in the house where the celebration was being held before the first two guests arrived. These guests entered through the back door. This lead them through the den into the family room and then to the dining room/kitchen. There were no doorways between any of these rooms, which allowed guests to move freely through the house while still being able to hear what was going on and communicate with others in the house. In the middle of the dining room was a large, oval, wooden table with six chairs surrounding it. There was a table cloth on the table that was black with pattern of different colored balloons, confetti and the word “PARTY!”, along with matching napkins. The napkins were left in a pile on one side of the table. In the middle of the table was a cone shaped, bright blue vase full of Zinnias. There were five balloons tied to a clear clip that was clipped on to the rim of the vase. Each balloon was a different color including red, orange, pink, blue, and yellow. The ribbons that tied off the balloons matched in color to that of each of the balloons. The balloons almost touched the rectangular light above the table, causing the room to be darkened. At first it was very quiet, with only the fan making noise, then one of the hosts (who was in the family room) turned on the television, broadcasting the sound from the six o’clock news. A conversation then began about television service. A host asked a guest if they would get a certain channel through their service provider. The guest did not know and the conversation moved how the Jamaican workers were liking their new TV and service. The topic of the Jamaican workers brought the conversation to what these workers had made for supper and what sort of meats they had bought to cook for their meals. Discussing the workers brought the conversation to the topic of government regulation dealing with the H2A program (which is the program that allows orchards to hire men from Jamaica to come pick their crops).
