In his speech addressing the graduating U.S. Military Academy class of 2013, General Raymond T. Odierno stated “The mission of this great institution is to produce leaders of character, committed to the values of duty, honor, country.” Honor starts with the individual. The inherent expectation – from members in the Army and the American People – is that the people who volunteer for service in the Army have some basis of moral values to start with, or at minimum, strive to do the right thing.8 To further sharpen that moral will, the Army instills within its personnel a code of ethics. “IMT [Initial Military Training] produces technically and tactically competent Soldiers who exemplify Army Values, and live the Warrior Ethos and are prepared to take their place in the ranks of the Army.”3 Mutual trust between two individuals forms easily when they believe they both share the same values, especially when the values consist of the will to do what is honorable.7 Any publications that dictates how the Army conducts its business, states that the actions must be done in accordance with Army Values.1 The Army publication on mission command emphasizes the principle that cohesive teams are essential to the success of the organizations, and those teams are established through an environment of mutual trust in peer-to-peer relationships and in subordinate-leader relationships.7 The relationships maintained through honorable intent and behaviors flow outward as a positive example to the organization.5 When that honor is consistent among the members of the organization, it builds esprit de corps. It also shows in how the organization conducts business, by ensuring its personnel are trained military experts who use their resources and influence efficiently and effectively.
