Although, the reading mentions that the increment of urbanization has improved due to different circumstances in the last 50 years, still many individuals live in rural areas in places called “Shantytowns”, which can also be known by many other names such as favelas in Brazil. Some families just follow the cycle that if they were born in those conditions they have to raise their children in those conditions, making it difficult for them to prosper. Living in the harsh conditions, as mentioned in the book, limits access to resources such as electricity, running water, and healthcare. Moreover, since they have so many limitations in order to get money some tend to lean on violence and drug selling in order to subsist. Ultimately, I would say that our beautiful city of Laredo has been evolving and has many opportunities for people, but not as much as more developed cities such as Austin, San Antonio, Houston, among others. We are still last on that list. An example would be education at the university level. Here in Laredo students have to look at different things before deciding where to attend college having two options either here in Laredo or to go out of
