In the horrible time of slavery, the United States of America was split into two different views about slavery. The North, was mostly anti-slavery and wanted to abolish slavery of African-Americans, while the South was pro-slavery and wanted the way of life to not change. In Georgia, a very slave influenced state, there was a $4,000 reward for Garrison’s arrest. In an extreme circumstance, a man who was seen subscribing to an abolitionist newspaper, The Liberator, “was pulled from his home by a mob, tarred and feathered and tied to a post for whipping” (Rogers, James T [pg#]). There was a similar instance in South Carolina, where a group of vigilantes offered $1,500 for the arrest of anyone distributing or having The Liberator. Slave owners lost many slaves due to Turner’s Rebellion where 100-200 African-American’s were killed. Southerners blamed Garrison’s newspaper and sent, “death threats and duel challenges” (The Agitator).
