With social media and the web, women have begun to photograph themselves in more realistic and naturalistic ways. Alessia Glaviano believes this has done a lot for women: “being able to be who we are, without feeling insecure or without feeling “I’m not beautiful because I am not Cindy Crawford”. Social Media such as Instagram has been used as a platform for women to share photos which change the way we perceive the females body. This could suggest the male gaze theory has become less relevant to visual culture in the late twentieth century as the female gaze has become more prevalent and women have started to take back the gaze.
