The purpose of The Paranoid Style of American Policing was to tell the story of the cruelty of the Chicago Police Department, along with other police around the country. Coates starts off by telling a story about his father being a mediator for a young man struggling with violence issues. Not only did Boswell meet his purpose, but he was able to include better details that back up his purpose by choosing multiple examples of of how war is irrational, unlike Coates who only used a personal account and a tragic incident to back up his purpose. Boswell’s tone was more assertive throughout his essay, also helping it to become more effective than Coates. Although the two essays are about two different things but still deal with violence, I feel that both authors could agree with Pope when he talks about violence saying, “It is as if two towns in opposite territories should be set on fire at the same time, and victory should be declared to the inhabitants of that in which the flames were least
