Throughout this program we have learned about differing theoretical models and how counselors can use these approaches when counseling students. The counseling theories that I have gravitated toward during counseling are the Person-Centered and Solution-Focused theories. The Person-Centered Theory, a theory that was explained and established by Carl R. Rogers, stresses the client’s capability and responsibility to come up with ways to more precisely recognize and cope with reality. In order to maximize the success of students, school counselors are also responsible in assessing academic performance and depending on the results are required to incorporate programs that will give aid in maintaining and/or improving areas of concern (American School Counselor Association, …show more content…
I understand that when working on intervention/prevention programs I must be proactive when made aware of potential issues and should address those issues in a timely manner.
As a counselor, I am aware that I will be counseling a multicultural population. I understand the importance of being able to accept varying attitudes, values, and norms of diverse populations. It will be my responsibility to be professional and exhibit high tact when handling situations that may not be in line with my own personal attitude, values and norms. Three successful strategies that I plan to use as a counselor will be:
Do research on your various cultures within your student population. Interview students of the population to ask them what services they think are available for them at the school. Ask parents and school staff to give their opinions of what culture of students need
