David K. Shipler is an author of several successful novels. One of which won the Pulitzer Prize, Arab and Jew. In the book, The Working Poor Invisible in America, uses first hand accounts which make them primary sources. Shipler had personal interviews and converged additional research. The author specifically states that “There are no composite characters in this book; I reject that device absolutely. Every person is real. The working conditions seem to be intolerable or unachievable to the more higher class. Manual labor workers go through conditions that should not be necessary. These workers should atleast get paid more for their enervating worth ethic. These people are the working poor. Immigration shows from the 3rd grading period and deals with humanity. Immigrants come to America seeking for a better life. But for many, it is outrages working conditions and jobs that regular Americans would never do. Candalaria who has been in the United States for nine years (during when the book was written) moved from different sewing jobs for companies. During the day Candalaria had to sew 797 flies on jeans each day to be paid $5.75. “I’m pretty fast a this,” she bragged, much faster than workers new to the industry. “I can do four cuts a day; each cut is twelve hundred to sixteen hundred pieces.” On a good day, Candalaria would get a total of $6, which leads into economics. Economics is a big part of The Working Poor Invisible in America. The production that is made from these working poor people makes a big impact on America’s economy.
