Even if Scout did not know it she observed how Mayella lived. Mayella tried to make the most of her broken situation. Mayella showed this first when they Ewell place is first described. The narrator described the yard as being a dump but there is “One corner of the yard, thought, bewildered Maycomb. Against the fence, in a line, were six chipped-enamel slop jars holding brilliant red geraniums” (228). These flowers were the work of Mayella Ewell. She was trying to better her situation or even make herself feel better about where she was living by planting these flowers and caring for them. Another example of Mayella’s strive to improve her situation was in the courtroom. When it is said “Mayella looked as if she tried to keep clean” (239). This is Mayella’s way of fighting back against the situation she is in and really has no way of getting out of. She is probably the only Ewell to bathe on a regular basis. Just like the flowers, this is Mayella keeping one part of her dirty situation clean. Finally, even though that Mayella is in a tough situation, she still offered Tom Robinson money after he did work for her. This shows that even when Mayella does not have the money or ability to do something to help the people around her she still has the heart to help her
