Tom always tries to fit in but he is just too distinct from everyone else and he never does. “He was a forsaken,friendless boy, he said; nobody loved him...he had tried to do right and get along,but they wouldn’t let him…”(Twain81). Tom is always lonely and he tried to make friends but it didn't work out, not because of him but because of others,by this people can tell that Tom doesn’t fit in. Comparable to the way Tom was looked at, the duck that hatched last in the story “The Ugly Duckling” was looked at differently than everyone else. “‘It’s a very large duckling,” said she; “none of the others look like that. Tom is a boy always searching for adventure and battling with constant evils. “There comes a time in every rightly constructed boy’s life when he has a raging desire to go somewhere and dig for hidden treasure.
