Cole is an innocent-looking-baby-faced-fifteen-year-old from Minneapolis whose father has beaten him for years now and all the bruises and scars still remain on his skin. His parents are usually drunk and they don’t care about him and they’re divorced which doesn’t make his situation any better. Since Cole’s visit on the island, the mythical creature Spirit Bear, has ripped his chest open and has broke lot’s of bones in his body. Cole probably doesn’t look the best right now, but neither does his personality.

He is trying to change the way he behaves because I feel like he knows life would be easier and not under so much pressure all the time if he changed. Cole also comprehended the circle of life and what the purpose of life is. In the beginning of the book Cole was a cocky, snobby boy who didn’t care about anything, now he has changed and knows what he has to do to make things better and what he has to do to change his ways.
