According to the book when you come upon a railroad crossing you should slow down and always yield to all train traffic, you should never pass any cars at a railroad crossing, stop on the tracks, shift gears on the tracks, you should not park closer than 50 feet from a railroad crossing unless there is a sign that says you can, or the local law allows it. It is recommended that you turn down your car radio, so that you can hear any train horns, and at night you should stop before railroad crossings and make sure there is no train approaching, because a train may not have a light on and it is dangerous to assume there is no train coming. The book also states that you must come to a complete stop when there are flashing lights, and that you may…

Railroad crossings are very dangerous and have caused many serious crashes and even deaths. When crossing them you have to be very aware of what is happening around you, and the signs telling you what to do and where to go. I believe that in order to avoid crashes while crossing them you need to use common sense, understand and see the signs warning you about the dangers, and if you do this you will be fine.
