Our armed forces fight to protect our country from external threats to American freedoms. John F. Kennedy described the price American soldiers pay when he said, “The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always paid it. And one path we shall never choose, and that is the path of surrender, or submission.” Americans will do everything possible to protect our freedoms because this country was founded upon that idea. The loss of freedom in America is certainly the death of our nation. While it is true that the military protects our freedoms, personal freedoms are defended inside the borders of America. Soldiers can keep us free from control by other nations, but individual citizens have the responsibility to maintain equality. The civil rights movement in America has proved that personal liberties can be gained and preserved through nonviolent means.
