Ashlynd Goodrich English 102 Mrs. Wixted 17 April 2024 “Macbeth” Journal Section 1: Summary of the Play William Shakespeare’s tragic play, “Macbeth,” tells the story of a Scottish thane, Macbeth, who becomes king and is filled with desires for power and prophecies. This play begins by introducing the characters Macbeth and Banquo, fighting a battle against the rebel enemy, Macdonwald. Eventually they are able to defeat him and as they travel across a moor they see three witches who tell them both a prophecy. Macbeth was to become Thane of Cawdor then, “though shalt be king hereafter” (I.iii.53), while Banquo was to “.get kings, though thou be none” (I.iii.70). Macduff then flees to England to join Fleance, and to ensure the first prophecy would not come true, Macbeth kills Macduff’s family and orders his castle to be seized. While still in England, Macduff hears the news of his family’s murder and is stricken with grief and revenge. Fleance is able to conjure an army in England to fight against Macbeth and Macduff joins. Once they reach Scotland, the nobility joins Macduff’s side as they fear Macbeth’s murderous state. In Macbeth’s castle, the readers discover Lady Macbeth to be sleepwalking and complaining about blood stains on her hands. Her grief and guilt are too much for her and she ends up taking her own life. Macbeth hears this news and while he is saddened, he does not take it heavily and instead prepares more for the English forces. Once Macduff and the army arrives, they shield themselves with Birnam wood to enter the castle, causing Macbeth to become fearful as they broke the third prophecy. During the battle in the castle, Macbeth and Macduff fight and eventually it is revealed that Macduff was “untimely ripped” from his mother’s womb, so he was not technically born of a
