Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls, takes place in the late 1900’s and tells the story of a boy whose love for his dogs could not be contained. All the time with his dogs was not all pleasant and happy moments; Billy took on a great responsibility with two dogs and the dogs came with sacrifice and suffering. Billy worked even before he got his dogs, and continued to work even after the death of his dogs. Billy made sacrifices to train his pups, to help them get coons, and made sacrifices for his family. Billy suffered through hard times but worked through it and was strong. Billy matures as he learns to accept suffering and to make sacrifices. Billy made great sacrifices and worked hard to earn his dogs and then train them. Billy really wanted dogs, but his family didn’t have money enough for them. So Billy took things into his own hands and worked hard to earn money for his dogs and then train them. Billy got any job he could to earn money, including selling minnows, fresh vegetables, and crawfish to the fishermen and picking berries during berry season. When Billy wanted dogs, he set his heart and mind to it and pushed through sacrifices and work to earn the money he needed to get the dogs he wanted. During the competition that would not only give Billy the pride of being the best coon hunter in the county but also give his family money to move, Billy had to stop hunting and leave his dogs to help his grandpa whom he loved and cared for through the night. Billy learned through the death and suffering of his dogs that the love he had for his dogs, and his dogs had for him, would never end.
