A typical American grows up with one goal in mind: getting a job. An individual strives to obtain a job so he or she can provide for himself or herself. From a fry cook at McDonalds to a businessman on Wall Street, there are ample amounts of jobs available in the world today. Every job is different simply because each requires different responsibilities, different skills, and different education levels. There are many reasons that persuade most people to desire certain jobs over others. Individuals tend to value the sought-after jobs over the undesired jobs, when in reality people should value all jobs equally.

Undesirable are often referred to as blue-collar. People who do not perform well in school usually go after the blue-collar jobs since they require little to no education. Jobs, not as desirable as others, often require an individual to partake in manual labor. Manual labor is typically physically exhausting to individuals. Alfred Libran wrote that his bricklaying fathers “knees were aching and his back muscles were throbbing in clockable intervals that registered in his eyes” (351). Lubrano was describing his father at the end of a week of bricklaying. The manual labor performed during the blue-collar job was so harsh on the father that it caused him to feel pain throughout his body. Another example of an undesired job is a sanitation engineer. To become a trash collector, an individual does not have to endure schooling. The job requires an individual to lift heavy garbage cans above his or her head. The act of lifting objects up and down will eventually cause a harsh affect on an individual’s body. Jobs provide an individual the ability to care for him or herself. There are many factors that can help in determining what type of job a person will most likely achieve. Less educated people usually have undesired jobs, while a more educated person commonly attains a desirable job. All jobs, desirable and undesirable, require tasks to be completed. Responsibilities vary from job to job. Just because one job may require an individual to save a life, while another job may require an individual to pick up trash does not mean one job should be respected more than the other. People need to value all jobs equally no matter how different the responsibilities between jobs
