Aztecs had landless serfs and slaves. Serfs worked on lands that nobles owned and serfs didn’t have homes. Slaves were common in the empire. Slave owners were responsible for feeding and housing their slaves. Some individuals became slaves as a punishment or sold themselves or their children to pay-off debts. Slaves couldn’t be resold and being a slave was not inherited from parents. Slaves gained freedom when their owner died and they also gained freedom by marrying their owner.
Aztec daily lives differed from festival days. Ordinary people lived in one-roomed houses with a door in one wall. The flat roof was extra space for storing items. “Only nobles were allowed to have two story houses. These houses had pools and gardens, and they were located in the center courtyard.” Adults and kids ate tortillas every day. A 12-year-old had a ration of two tortillas a day. The Aztecs invented xocoatl(bitter water), it was spicy hot chocolate drink. It became popular after Spanish introduced sugar. Aztecs practiced advanced medicine. Aztecs created and used antispasmodic medication to prevent muscle spasm and used it during the surgery. The passion flower used to treat insomnia, epilepsy and high blood pressure. New inventions led to the successful creation of the empire.
Aztec culture was an advanced society that had new technologies, agriculture and social and political administration because of their willingness to create an empire. Aztecs started off as a town in the middle of nowhere and managed to build a city. Aztec religion and culture were important because it led them to conquer tribes and empires. Aztec society was properly established which led the population to increase in Tenochtitlan. Aztecs had great inventions that contributed to building an empire.
