It is one with the Chinese New Year, and since ancient times this has been a festival that means a tremendous deal to China. This festival originated from all the way back in the Shang Dynasty, which is believed to have been around in 1600 B.C-1100 B.C. The Spring Festival is looked to be equivalent to American Christmas; the family members that moved away come back home, and families get together to celebrate. The Festival starts in the early days of December, and is celebrated all to New Years and into the new month. Preparations begin early in December, family begins to come and festivities begin. On the 23rd of December many families make a portage called laba for preliminary eve, this is a dish consisting of glutinous rice, millet, seeds of Job 's tears, jujube berries, lotus seeds, beans, longan and gingko. Everyone gets a week off from work and all normal activity. When New Year’s Eve comes family usually eats an extravagant meal together. This traditional festival is over 2,000 years old and, originated in times that were ruled by a man named Qu Yuan. A part of the tradition for this festival is that tams get together, and have an annual boat race. A group of people get together and join in a dragon shaped boat that is colorful, then when the referee of the race says everyone is ready they fire a gun to start the race. When the race starts team’s row across rivers and rapids to get to the finish line, teams work together and try to get to the end the fastest then winners win prizes. Another tradition that is tied with this festival is that parents must dress their kids up with silk pouches. This is supposed to ward off any evil spirits, the pouches are made of silk cloth with perfume or herbs in the bag, and then it is sewn up with silk
